[Tanzkarte, Velociped-Club Roth]

Forschungsstelle für fränkische Volksmusik

Description

Displayed is a dance card (probably belonging to a man) from a cycling club in Roth in Middle Franconia. On the front of the card, next to the club name "Velociped-Club Roth.", there is an embossed image framed in gold (a couple dancing, the man kissing the woman’s hand). On the two inside pages and on the back are details of the evening’s programme, consisting of a promenade concert, masquerades and various surprises, as well as the order of the dances. The latter comprised round dances, dances for several couples, figure dances, the ladies’ ball and the "Kehraus", which marks the end of a dance event.

The term dance cards usually refers to small pamphlets in which the programme of an evening of dancing was printed (sometimes together with details of the music being played and its composers). Originating in the 18th century, their popularity grew rapidly, especially in the 19th century. In addition to its function as a dance programme, it was also used to keep a list of dance engagements between a man and a woman. This method was designed to ensure that the event could proceed correctly and in accordance with the etiquette of the time. Dance cards are largely unheard of in modern society.
