Maps concerning Church and Religion
The collection shows a selection of maps of the Bavarian dioceses. A map of the diocese of Bamberg (Mapp. 45, 6-15), which has been preserved in an atlas by Georg Braun and Abraham Hogenberg, published in Cologne in 1618, is worthy of special mention. Four maps of Swabia, Berchtesgaden, Regensburg and Franconia are taken from the Atlas Marianus by the Jesuit Heinrich Scherer (1628-1704) (4 Mapp. 100 i#12,13,14,16). He had studied mathematics, including geography, and worked as a princely educator in Mantua and Munich. The Atlas Marianus is part of the Atlas Novus, which comprises over 2,000 pages and the significance of which lies above all on the copper-plate maps and engravings. They mainly illustrate religious themes, which is why this work is one of the earliest prints with a considerable number of thematic maps. Also worth mentioning are maps representing the distribution of confessional denominations.
