Von den Schlüsseln

Description

In the summer of 1530, Martin Luther (1483-1546) on Coburg Fortress also wrote a polemic pamphlet about the papal power of the keys. Of the first rejected version, only the autograph manuscript is available. Luther used this as the basis for a revision that was almost completed on 24 August 1530, so that he could give it to his assistant Veit Dietrich (1506-1549) on 25 August 1530. Dietrich added a remark at the beginning and end of the text. The manuscript bears the traces of a struggle with the text: it is annotated with numerous marginal remarks and inserts, entire passages are crossed out in a grid-pattern, almost the entire text has been deleted by Martin Luther himself with lines. The print after the revised manuscript was executed in Wittenberg. Already on 20 October 1530, a reprint by Johann Stüchs was available in Nuremberg. The double page (fols. 30v/31r) is strongly discoloured, since the Nuremberg Municipal Library displayed the composite manuscript for over 20 years in a permanent exhibition set up around 1900. Datum: 2016
