Trios

Description

In 1891, one year after his decision to stop composing, Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) took up his pen once again and, inspired by the atmosphere in Meiningen, wrote the Trio for Clarinet, Cello and Piano op. 114, which he dedicated to the local solo clarinettist Richard Mühlfeld (1856-1907). In its serenity, it is regarded as a prototype of Brahms' late work. Brahms gifted the Trio's manuscript to his patron and sponsor Fritz Steinbach (1855-1916), the Meiningen Hofkapellmeister (court music director). Steinbach brought the manuscript to Munich in 1914, where it passed to the singer and composer Adolf Wallnöfer (1854-1946) after Steinbach's death in 1916. On 28 October 1942, the Städtische Musikbibliothek München [Municipal Music Library of Munich] acquired the manuscript from Wallnöfer. The 26 pages of sheet music run along safely and calmly, while corrections of an incisive nature are rarely found. An amendment on page 6 presents a puzzle, which modern fluoroscopy method has not yet been able to solve.
