Aschaffenburg, Schloss Johannisburg

Stadt- und Stiftsarchiv Aschaffenburg

Description

The history of graphic sheets with Aschaffenburg motifs begins with Georg Ridinger's book on castle construction from 1616. The bird's-eye view of Schloss Johannisburg by Georg Keller published there served as a model and inspiration for the artists who followed. 75 years later, the engraver Nikolaus Person (c. 1650-1710) created a representation of a castle, which the sheet reproduced in every detail. The depicted square castle complex with four three-storey wings and four corner and stair towers differs from the actual building, among other things, by the keep crowned with a Renaissance helmet and provided with a surrounding gallery and windows. A French-style garden section also adjoins the west wing. The colour-washed pen and ink drawing by an unknown hand in turn copies the sheet created by the artist in every detail. Only the garden is not shown in the bird's-eye view, but in the plan view.
