Description

The Bavarian capital was badly hit during the air raids on Munich in the Second World War. Half of the city’s total area was destroyed, and as much as 90 percent of the old town. In addition to its importance as the location of companies important to the war such as BMW, Krauss-Maffei, Meiller, Südbremse, Dornier, etc., the "capital of the National Socialism movement" was also an important target in terms of propaganda.

On 29/30 April 1945, fighting broke out during the invasion of the US army. Munich was badly damaged by 73 air raids (1940-1945).

The reconstruction of the old town according to a plan by Karl Meitinger (1882-1970) was carried out in traditional building designs with widened streets.

During the air raids on Munich in the Second World War, the Residenz was severely damaged, especially in 1944, and largely reconstructed in the decades that followed.
