Auferstehung und Himmelfahrt Christi

Description

The Roman ivory relief is an early monument of Christian art that develops during the fourth century. The encounter between women who hurry to the tomb of Christ on Easter morning with the angel would remain the typical depiction of Easter in western art up to the twelfth century. The tree, the fruits of which provide birds with food, marks the tomb of the Lord as a life-giving place. The vocabulary of design follows the classicism of the Theodosian period.
