The Staatsarchiv Amberg

The Staatsarchiv Amberg (Amberg State Archive) is the government authority for all matters related to archive studies in the administrative district of the Upper Palatinate. It dates back to the archives and registries of the government authority of Amberg of the Principality of the Upper Palatinate, up to 1621 territory of the Elector Palatine until it was ceded together with the electoral title to the Duke of Bavaria in 1621/28. Its first record dates from 1436, when a "document vault" ("Briefgewölbe") of the Amberg Chancellery is mentioned. When the Upper Palatinate became a district in 1799, the Amberger Regierungsarchiv (Amberg government archive) turned into the "Landesarchiv" (state archive) of this district. After various reorganizations it reopened in 1841 as an archive conservatory; in 1875 it was renamed "Kreisarchiv" (District Archive) together with all the other regional state archives, until it became the "Staatsarchiv Amberg" in 1921.

The Staatsarchiv Amberg is responsible for historical written material of the Upper Palatinate of the old Roman-German Empire; this includes the period of the Principality of the Upper Palatinate, an imperial district governed by the Elector Palatine until it was turned over to the Duke of Bavaria, and all its monasteries, as well as the Landgraviate of Leuchtenberg, the Principality of Palatinate-Sulzbach, several self- governing districts under the emperor and the offices, lands and manors of the Duchy of Palatinate-Neuburg in the Northern county.

With the reforms of the Napoleonic era, the Amberg Archive became responsible for the heritage of the Bavarian middle and lower-level authorities of the administrative district of the Upper Palatinate and the preceding river districts. Furthermore it maintains the registries of the subordinate authorities of the imperial and federal civil administration and a considerable volume of written material collected by both private and official archivists.

For public use, the current terms of the general regulations for the use of the Bavarian State Archives from 16 January 1990 (GVBl S. 6) apply, which also lay down the fees that are due.

The Staatsarchiv Amberg is subordinate to the Generaldirektion der Staatlichen Archive Bayerns (Directorate General of the Bavarian State Archives).
