The Archäologische Staatssammlung. Museum für Vor- und Frühgeschichte

The Archäologische Staatssammlung München (Archaeological Collection of the Bavarian State), which is currently closed due to construction work, was founded in 1885.

With its five departments (Prehistoric, Roman Period, Middle Ages, the Mediterranean, Numismatics), its permanent exhibition, conservation studios and depots it forms the central state museum. Its rich holdings of archaeological finds provide comprehensive insights into the diversity of early human existence. At present, the recently refurbished Roman section is shown over 300 sqm of exhibition space. Ten branch museums in several of Bavaria’s administrative districts illustrate the development of humankind in the respective regions with c.6,000 museum objects.

This decentralized structure with museums in different regions of Bavaria is due to the effort to exhibit important archaeological finds of certain regions as closely as possible to the place where they were found. Thus, distinctive features of cultural history can be vividly presented in a local environment to visitors and pupils in particular.
