Bayerische Denkmalliste

The Bayerische Denkmalliste (Bavarian List of Monuments) is the central informative and administrative tool for the preservation of and care for monuments in Bavaria. The list provides news and information on all known buildings of historic importance, on archaeological sites and on mobile monuments. The Bayerische Landesamt für Denkmalpflege (Bavarian State Office for Historic Preservation) is officially in charge of running and updating the list of monuments.

Each monument, independent of its entry in the list, is under legal protection, which applies to every monument as soon as it fulfills the legal prerequisites for a historical monument: "Monuments are man-made objects or parts thereof from past times, the preservation of which is in the general interest on the basis of their historical, artistic importance, in terms of urban planning, but also for their scientific as well as ethnological relevance."

The Denkmalliste is constantly updated. Additional information and continued creation of inventories are fed into the list. Addenda include more recent buildings or newly discovered archaeological sites. Deletion from the list becomes necessary upon loss of important features of a historical monument.
