Burgen in Bayern

The digital atlas of castles in Bavaria, which was created on the occasion of the 2008 Bavarian regional exhibition "Bavarian Nobility" presents in its first project phase c.150 of Bavaria’s most important castles. Surprisingly, the precise number of high and late mediaeval castles in Bavaria, still remains unknown, even though castles, ruins and palaces are so very present in the Bavarian landscape. Even if one considers all of the castles, ruined castles, palaces and sites of former castles that have so far been recorded, it is impossible to reconstruct the erstwhile density of castles, since in so many cases not even the site is known and some parts of Bavaria have not been inventoried sufficiently.

The selection criteria for being recorded in the castle atlas were manifold. Of particular importance were castles, which had been thoroughly examined by the Büro für Burgenforschung (Office for Castle Research) or other specialists. Others were castellologically-interesting objects with a focus on castle ruins. Well-known castles were listed as well as long as they had not lost their original characteristic by their conversion into palatial buildings; here they were classified as "Burgschlösser" (castle-palaces). The castle atlas has made it its aim to present less well-known buildings, worth the investigation. Only former castle sites have been omitted, since they would make the project too unwieldy.

The Büro für Burgenforschung Dr. Zeune is in charge of this project.
