The Kommission für bayerische Landesgeschichte bei der Bayerischen Akademie der Wissenschaften

The Kommission für bayerische Landesgeschichte bei der Bayerischen Akademie der Wissenschaften (Commission for Bavarian Regional History at the Bavarian Academy of Sciences) was founded in 1927 as a research institution for the coordination and realisation of long-term basic research on the history of Bavaria and of its diverse parts. The commission collaborates intensively with other institutions with a focus on regional history, in particular with the Schwäbische Forschungsgemeinschaft (Swabian Research Association) and with the Gesellschaft für fränkische Geschichte (Association for Franconian History), as well as with the relevant academic chairs and professorships in Bavaria and its neighbouring countries. Research institutions such as the Schwäbische Forschungsstelle Augsburg (Swabian Research Unit Augsburg) and the Institut für Volkskunde (Ethnological Institute) form part of the commission.

The commission consists of around 60 elected scholars whose main profession is in the majority exercised at Bavarian universities and other academic institutions. The members of the commission head the projects accepted by the commission and take editorial responsibility for diverse series of publications.

The most important focus of the commission's work rests on the historical-topographical description of Bavaria, the results of which can be found in particular in the "Historischer Atlas von Bayern" (Historical Atlas of Bavaria) and in the "Historisches Ortsnamenbuch von Bayern" (Book of Historical Bavarian Placenames). In addition, the commission’s main attention is directed at the edition of the types of mediaeval and early modern sources essential for regional history, which are published across several series. The commission publishes journals such as the "Zeitschrift für bayerische Landesgeschichte" (Journal for Bavarian Regional History), the "Bayerisches Jahrbuch für Volkskunde" (Bavarian Ethnological Year Book) and the "Bayerische Vorgeschichtsblätter" (Bavarian Journal for Pre-History) which constitute the most fundamental learned periodicals for any research on Bavaria. In accordance with its political mandate, the commission has been engaged since the 1990s in the digitised supply of regional and historical information by means of on-line projects such as the "Bayerische Landesbibliothek Online" (Bavarian Regional Library Online), the "Historisches Lexikon Bayerns" (Historical Dictionary of Bavaria) and the portal "bavarikon".

The Institut für Volkskunde (Ethnological Institute) is affiliated to the Kommission für bayerische Landesgeschichte.
