The Historische Kommission bei der Bayerischen Akademie der Wissenschaften
The Historische Kommission bei der Bayerischen Akademie der Wissenschaften (Historical Commission at the Bavarian Academy of Sciences), was founded in1858 by the Bavarian King Maximilian II (1811-1864) at the suggestion of Leopold von Ranke (1795-1886). As a professional academy in the field of the humanities it is a unique institution. It is both a scholarly community and a research institute, carrying out basic research on German history in over a dozen departments with editions of sources from the late Middle Ages to contemporary history (Reichstag files, German historical sources of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, files of the Reich Chancellery, minutes of the Bavarian Council of Ministers, etc.).
A second focus is on historical-biographical work in the form of the Deutsche Biographie and of the Repertorium Academicum Germanicum. The Historical Commission also offers the results of its work digitally step by step; it participates intensively in the methodological and technical discourse in the field of Digital Humanities.
