Deutsche Biographie

The Deutsche Biographie (German Biography) is a cooperative project between the Historische Kommission and the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek (Bavarian State Library). As a historical-biographical information system, it provides valid information on over 730,000 people. Core of the offer are the approximately 50,000 dictionary articles from the Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie (ADB) and the Neue Deutsche Biographie (NDB, vols. 1–26, A–Vocke). Further personal information can be accessed directly on the internet in encyclopaedias, sources, literature, objects, works and portraits via Normdaten (GND).

With the help of a search via maps and filter options for places of birth and death, places of action and places of burial, a geographical access to people is also possible. Visualisations of networks show the relationship between people.

For bavarikon, the 17,000 articles of the 50,000 ADB and NDB articles on people connected to Bavaria through their lives and work were extracted.

On the part of the Historische Kommission, an editorial staff of five is responsible for the historical-biographical encyclopaedia articles, which are to be continuously integrated into the Deutsche Biographie as purely digital NDB articles online after completion of the printed NDB edition within a few years.
