Military Maps

The collection primarily comprises general maps showing the events of the wars and their effects from a wide variety of perspectives. Plans of fortresses also fall into this section. Only a few exemplars from the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek's (Bavarian State Library) extensive holdings of military and battle maps have so far been digitised.

Due to its rarity, the bird's eye plan "Warhaffte Contrafactur der Statt Memmingen (...)" (True Likeness of the City of Memmingen), published around 1650, which records the siege of the city at the end of the Thirty Years' War, needs to be mentioned. It has only been preserved in a few specimens. An imaginative representation of terrain and mountains can be found in the Schlacht bei Hohenlinden (Battle of Hohenlinden) of 3 December 1800, which Adrian von Riedl published in his Reise-Atlas. A representative and decorative example is the map published in Augsburg by Ferdinand Ebner entitled "Umgebung von Augsburg: nebst bildlicher Darstellung der k. b. Truppen mit Bezug auf das vom 1ten bis 15ten September 1838 daselbst Statt findende Uebungslager" (Surroundings of Augsburg: together with a pictorial representation of the royal Bavarian troops with reference to the exercise camp taking place there from 1 September to 15 September 1838). The picture rail shows representations of individual scenes from the everyday life of Bavarian troops during exercises.
