Maps of Central Franconia

In the sixteenth century, the imperial city of Nuremberg had produced two important cartographers, Jörg Nöttelein and Paul Pfinzing the Elder. Nöttelein's "Wald- und Fraißkarte" (Forest and Adminstrative Map), printed in 1562/63, is considered "one of the best maps of its time" (Hans Wolff) due to its clarity and accuracy. It is based on surveys that were valid until the eighteenth century and its significance is comparable to that of Philipp Apian's "Landtaflen" (Bavarian Maps).

The region around Nuremberg is thus one of the territories that were mapped most precisely in the sixteenth century. These and other maps can be found in this collection. At the beginning of the eighteenth century, the region around Ansbach was surveyed relatively accurately by the geometer Johann Georg Vetter. Numerous maps - especially of Nuremberg and its surroundings - include the atlases of Stridbeck, Bodenehr, Homann, Seutter and Reilly. The latter mainly contains maps of individual counties and principalities in the region. A map of the Rezat district has been preserved in the atlas of J.B. Roost, published in 1834.
