Maps of Lower Franconia

One of the most important old maps of present-day Bavaria is the map of the Franconian Imperial District by Sebastian von Rotenhan (2 Mapp. 133#24) (1533). Frequently reprinted over a long time it is preserved in the Bavarian State Library in the atlas Theatrum oder Schawplatz des Erdbodems by Abraham Ortelius, published in Antwerp in 1572. These and the following maps can be found in this collection.

The maps of the Franconian Imperial District by Jan Jansson and Abraham Goos (1632) (Mapp. XI, 280 cb) and by Frederik de Wit (1680 and 1690 and 1711 respectively) (Mapp. XI, 283) deserve special mention. The first map of the Bishopric of Würzburg (Mapp. XI,343 x) was drawn by the surveyor Johann Heinrich Seyfried. It was engraved by Hans Jakob Schollenberger and first appeared in Nuremberg in 1685. As regards the church history of the Duchy of Franconia, the maps "Tres Sacri Electorat." (Munich 1699) (4 Mapp. 100 i#16) from the Atlas Marianus by Heinrich Scherer and "Provincia Franconica" (Hbks/E 33 hb#Kt.58,a) by J.B. Giovanni et al. (Milan before 1714), as well as a map of the Würzburg Bishopric (Mapp. 8-4, 1#56) from the "Atlas Selectus" by Johann Baptist Homann provide important information. Reilly's atlas The "Schauplatz der Fünf Theile der Welt" (Site of the Five Parts of the World) contains maps of individual counties. A map of the Lower Main District of the Kingdom of Bavaria (Hbks/F 19 b#kt.8) is included in the atlas by J.B. Roost for the first time in 1834.
