Ryall, Henry Thomas: H.R.H. Prince Alfred and Princess Helena 1849

The painting on which this lithograph is based was created by the German painter Franz Xaver Winterhalter in London in 1849. It shows Prince Alfred (“Affie”) together with his little sister Helena (“Lenchen”). Alfred, in Highland Dress, holds feathers in his hand, which belong to a special Scottish hat (Glengarry bonnet) and Lenchen tries to grab it. Queen Victoria was delighted by the picture showing her extroverted, inquisitive and musically gifted son playing with the “tomboy” Helena.
