Lane, Richard James: Prince Arthur (a sketch) 1853

Early practice makes the soldier! Queen Victoria gave the portrait of her third son Arthur, wearing a miniature Scottish fusiliers' uniform made to measure, to her husband Albert on 26 August 1853 for his birthday. In fact, Prince Arthur (1850–1942), Duke of Connaught and Strathearn, began his military career at the age of sixteen. But unlike his famous godfather Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington, he did not make it to Commander-in-Chief of the British Army but at least became Field Marshal and Governor General of Canada.
