The Historischer Verein Neuburg an der Donau

History

The Historische Verein Neuburg an der Donau (Historical Association Neuburg an der Donau) was founded in 1833 and is one of Bavaria's oldest historical societies. Its foundation was largely influenced by the Neuburg merchant Joseph Benedikt Graßegger (1776-1849) and by his collecting and research activities. Graßegger acquired valuable furnishings of Neuburg Castle, above all the precious tapestries that Count Palatine Ottheinrich (1502-1559) had commissioned, at auctions in the early nineteenth century. On the basis of these acquisitions, the so-called "Graßegger Collection" became one of Bavaria's most extensive and valuable collections, comprising objects from the fifteenth to the nineteenth centuries.

In 1884, the city of Neuburg allowed the association to use the city coat of arms on the seal of the association. In the second half of the twentieth century, the association's collections of contemporary history were considerably expanded, thus preserving valuable testimonies of everyday culture. Part of the collection is presented in the city museum. A further part of the collection is part of the permanent exhibition at the Schlossmuseum Neuburg (Castle Museum Neuburg), founded in 1987 and sponsored by the Bavarian Palace Department. The city museum operated by the Historischer Verein (Historical Association) was officially opened in April 2005 with a ceremonial act as part of the anniversary year "500 Years of the Principality of Pfalz-Neuburg". In the same year, the regional exhibition "Von Kaisers Gnaden" (By the Grace of the Emperor) took place and was attended by over 110,000 guests. The Historical Society took part in this exhibition with numerous valuable exhibits. In 2017, as part of the anniversary of the Reformation, the largest exhibition in the history of the association to date, the special exhibition "Fürsten Macht & wahrer Glaube" (Princely Power & True Faith) was held.

Work

The Historische Verein Neuburg an der Donau collects and preserves testimonies of history, art and culture in the large district capital of Neuburg on the Danube and in the district of Neuburg-Schrobenhausen as well as in the areas of the former principality of Pfalz-Neuburg, the residence city of which was Neuburg on the Danube.

In addition to promoting science and research as well as the preservation of historical monuments, the Historische Verein is also responsible for maintaining and supplementing the Association's own collection of archival material and its organisational connection with the city archive and for maintaining an academic library (within the library network). In addition, the annual "Neuburger Kollektaneenblatt" (Collectanea) has been published since 1835. In it, research results are presented in contributions on local and regional history from the entire area of Pfalz Neuburg.
