Otto Braun

Otto (Philipp) Braun (1824-1900) was a German journalist and poet. Born in Kassel, Braun first attended the local Friedrichsgymnasium and later studied law, history, modern languages and the fine arts in Bonn, Heidelberg and Marburg. During his studies, Braun was active in several student fraternities, for example in 1846 in the "Corps Rhenania Bonn" and, from November 1847, in the "Corps Teutonia Marburg". In 1848, he took part in the negotiations of the so-called "German Student Parliament" in Eisenach. In 1850, he went to Paris, where he studied Romance studies and became friends with the revolutionary and later American politician Carl Schurz (1829-1906) as well as with the poet and translator Adolf Strodtmann (1829-1879). In 1855, the publisher Georg von Cotta (1796-1863) sent him abroad, in particular to Spain.

From 1857, Braun published the Hessische Jahrbücher and the Kasseler Sonntagsblatt. From 1860 to 1889, he became editor of the Allgemeine Zeitung in Augsburg, which was published by the Cotta'sche Verlagsbuchhandlung (Cotta's publishing company) and highly regarded within the German Federation. In 1869, the latter moved the Allgemeine Zeitung to Munich and made Braun its editor-in-chief on 1 March 1869. In 1882, Braun also moved to Munich. The Cotta-Verlag appointed him in 1891 as editor of the Musen-Almanach in Stuttgart, which he would publish until 1900. Braun wrote and translated poetry ("Aus allerlei Tonarten. Verdeutschte spanische und eigene Lyrik", 1893) and devoted himself particularly to the arts section.
