Bibles and biblical books from the holding of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek

The Bible is the central book for the great world religions Judaism and Christianity. Bibles and biblical books play a special role in the handwritten tradition and then in the transition from the culture of manuscripts to that of printing in the 15th and 16th centuries. Many Bibles are richly illustrated. There are complete editions of both the Jewish and Christian Bible (BSB Clm 4501 a and 12741), but also various compilations, e.g. of the Old (Cgm 204, German Bible) and New Testament (Clm 10024) - also in the form of Gospels (Clm 6215), the Pentateuch or Torah (Cod.hebr. 212 or 392), the psalms (cf. also Psalter), and many more. These were produced in diverse formats, even as early as in the Middle Ages: from the giant Bible (giant Bible Clm 13001) to the small-format pocket Bible in pearl script (Clm 23355). Bibles and biblical texts were already translated into various languages before the Reformation, including German (Ottheinrich Bible, Cgm 8010) or into Hungarian (Cod.hung. 1) in the form of the so-called Hussite Bible. A special role is played by illustrated Bibles or retellings, paupers' Bibles (Cgm 155, Clm 8201, Rar. 4) or historiated Bibles (Cgm 522, Cgm 1101 and 1102). bavarikon presents some magnificent items from the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek's extensive collection. Apocryphal books, exegetical works and scientific works such as biblical glossaries are also classified here.
