Religious texts from non-Christian cultures from the holding of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek

Judaism, Christianity and Islam are all book religions which, in addition to their holy scriptures, the Bible and the Koran as central texts, also produce a wide range of other religious literature, such as hagiographies, doctrines, edifying literature and books of the dead.

bavarikon presents a number of these sacred writings and texts from non-Christian religions, which are kept in the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek's collection. These range from lavishly designed splendid Korans, like the Koran of Seville (Cod.arab. 1), the golden Koran from the 11th or 12th century (Cod.arab. 1112), a Koran in Kufic script (Cod.arab. 2569) and the Koran written in Iran in 1714 (Cod.arab. 1118) through to religious Jewish texts , here in particular the Babylonian Talmud (Cod.hebr. 95), but also rituals for the New Year, the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur) and the Feast of Tabernacles (Cod.hebr. 86) as well as the "Tegernseer Haggadah" (Cod.hebr. 200). The latter is a story and collection of instructions for the Seder evening on Erev Pessach (Passover), the eve of the celebration of the liberation of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. One extraordinary manuscript is provided by the Tibetan Mahāmokṣa-sūtra (Cod.tibet. 922) from the 19th century, which contains Mahayana sutras from the Kanjur, the canon of Tibetan Buddhism. Mahayana sutras are Buddhist aphorisms (sutras) that have been especially recognised as canonical by the so-called Mahayana schools. Cod.mongol.76, another Buddhist text, is a further testament of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek's rich collection of manuscripts, Cod.jav. 2592 is representative of the extremely extensive collection of Javanese manuscripts, which number over two and a half thousand units.
