Classical authors from antiquity and the Middle Ages from the holding of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek

The canon of classical European literary history starts with the heroic epics Iliad and Odyssey ascribed to Homer. The Bayerische Staatsbibliothek holds a late antique papyrus on this (Pap.graec.mon. 128), which is able to illustrate the richness and abundance of its collection from the beginnings to the present day at the same time. The selection in bavarikon includes a manuscript of Vergil's Aeneis (Clm 829), which represents the Roman national epic, while German medieval literature is represented by Wolfram von Eschenbach (Cgm 18, 19 and 61) and Gottfried von Straßburg (Cgm 51). Highly famous medieval works composed in Latin, such as the Carmina burana (Clm 4660), are also manuscripts at the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek that help define its identity. The literary works have been handed down as manuscripts and prints and often in the form of autographs and estates too.
