Margareta Ebner, Offenbarungen (Revelations)

Margareta Ebner (1291-1351), Dominican nun at the Maria Medingen monastery near Dillingen, is one of the most important representatives of 14th century German female mysticism. She fell seriously ill in 1312 and was sick and bedridden all her life. She formed a deep spiritual friendship with the mystic Heinrich von Nördlingen (ca. 1310-1387), whom she met in 1332, with the long correspondence between them constituting the first preserved German-language collection of letters.

Margareta Ebner was also in contact with Johannes Tauler (died 1361, Cgm 260) and the Dominican mystic Christine Ebner (1277-1356) from Engelthal, who was not related to her.

Heinrich von Nördlingen had Margareta Ebner write down her mystical visions in her revelations from 1344. They are characterised by a deep devotion to Christ with Christmas, bridal and Passion ideas. This manuscript from the Franciscan Maria Medingen convent (1353) is the oldest source of information. The baroque binding was probably made around 1715.
