The Historischer Verein für Oberpfalz und Regensburg

The Historischer Verein für Oberpfalz und Regensburg (Historical Association for Upper Palatinate and Regensburg) is one of the early historical associations in Bavaria that was founded at the suggestion of King Ludwig I of Bavaria (1825-1848) at the level of the administrative districts (at that time: "Kreise"). Since its foundation on 20 November 1830, the royally privileged association has been the region's central historical and cultural association. Its goals are

  • to conduct scientific research into the history of Upper Palatinate and to raise the population's historical awareness,
  • to disseminate historical knowledge about the Upper Palatinate, in particular through the publication of the association magazine, lectures and guided tours,
  • to maintain and further develop the historical heritage of the Upper Palatinate cultural landscape, traditionally also in the field of monument preservation.

The negotiations of the Historische Verein für Oberpfalz und Regensburg (VHVO) have been published continuously since 1831 until today (electronic publications can be found here). The contributions to archaeology, history, art history and folklore contained therein form an important historical research basis for Regensburg, the Upper Palatinate and the whole of Bavaria.
