The Deutsches Museum von Meisterwerken der Naturwissenschaft und Technik
The Deutsches Museum von Meisterwerken der Naturwissenschaft und Technik (German Museum Masterpieces of Science and Technology) in Munich is one of the world's largest natural science and technology museums and attracts around 1.5 million visitors annually. It has a collection of over 100,000 exhibits, including both unique originals and historical replicas.
The museum was founded in 1903 on the initiative of Oskar von Miller (1855-1934). Initially, the temporary exhibitions were housed in the Altes Nationalmuseum in Maximilianstrasse and in the Schwere-Reiter-Kaserne. The ceremonial opening of the main building on the Museumsinsel took place on 7 May 1925.
The museum's four branches expand the spectrum: The Verkehrszentrum (Transportation Museum) illustrates the subject of mobility with the help of historical road and rail vehicles, bicycles, motorcycles and other means of transport. The Flugwerft Schleißheim (Schleißheim Airfield) houses a large part of the aviation collection with over 70 aircraft from the Lilienthal glider to the Eurofighter. And the Deutsches Museum Bonn (German Museum Bonn) is the first museum in Germany dedicated to contemporary research and technology. And from 2020 onwards, the German Museum Nürnberg (German Museum Nuremberg) will be all about visions of the future and science fiction.
Among the special highlights at the Deutsches Museum are, for example, the Wright brothers' first powered aircraft, the U 1 submarine, the first program-controlled computer – the Z3 by Konrad Zuse and the first diesel engine on the Museumsinsel. Carl Benz's first car can be seen at the Verkehrszentrum, the Douglas DC 3 at the Flugwerft Schleißheim and the first "Fischer Wall Plug" in the Deutsches Museum Bonn.
