Letters from Katharina Hanfstaengl to Helene Raff

Katharina (Kitty) Wilhelmina Hanfstaengl, née Sedgwick-Heine (1859-1945), was the widow of the Royal Bavarian court photographer Edgar Hanfstaengl (1842-1910). One of her five children was Ernst Hanfstaengl (1887-1975), who was known as a former supporter of Adolf Hitler (1889-1945), foreign press officer of the NSDAP and later employee of Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882-1945). Katharina Hanfstaengl was the sole owner of the company Franz Hanfstaengl, Hofkunstanstalt und Kunstverlag. She was also Chair of the Fraueninteressen-Verein Garmisch (Women's Interests Association Garmisch).

The 34 letters and cards from Hanfstaengl to Helene Raff (1865-1942) date over a period of almost 30 years and testify to the friendly and respectful relationship between the two women: "I have read two of your works with pleasure here in peace!" (13.6.1914); "How can I thank you for all the beautiful feelings with which you bring the past to life?" (19.7.1942)
