Official books and records from the Stiftsarchiv Aschaffenburg

There are approximately 4,000 documents as well as several thousand files and so-called "official books" in the historical archive of the former St. Peter and Alexander collegiate monastery in Aschaffenburg. These books but also records and manuscripts with copies of documents served the monastery's canons as aids for administration, but also for spiritual life and remembrance of the dead. The collection of official books and records comprises 70 copies; among them is an almost complete series of the collegiate chapter's records, in which the canons' important decisions and deliberations have been recorded since 1530.

In addition, the collection also contains much older manuscripts, including the oldest necrology (Book of the Dead) from the monastery's archives as well as copies of documents dating back to the early Middle Ages. Until now, the collection, like the complete files, was only insufficiently catalogued and difficult to access for interested users. Similar to the collection of documents, the collection is named after the St. Peter and Alexander collegiate church, which was founded in the middle of the 10th century in Aschaffenburg and existed until the beginning of the 19th century.

The monastery-like community of secular priests possessed numerous goods, income and rights that were scattered throughout the region. The focus was on the Mainviereck region but at times the influence extended from the Tauber to the Eder and to Thuringia. The entire monastery archive has been on permanent loan to the Stadt- und Stiftsarchiv Aschaffenburg since 1939.
