The Tiroler Landesarchiv

Based on the Tyrolean Archives Act of 2017, the Tiroler Landesarchiv (Tyrolean Regional Archive) is the public archives for the province of Tyrol. In organisational terms, it is a department in the Office of the Tyrolean Regional Government and is therefore integrated into the Tyrolean regional administration. In its core function, the Tiroler Landesarchiv is a state administrative archive, the foundation of which is the archive of the medieval Tyrolean sovereigns. More than 30,000 metres of archival records are stored on the archive’s shelves. The bulk of these documents, which date from the 11th century to the present day and is divided into hundreds of holdings, can be attributed to state (formerly sovereign) offices, departments and authorities. On the other hand, non-governmental and private archives such as estates, archives of nobility, associations and companies are modest in number, but represent a valuable and indispensable addition in terms of content.

The Tiroler Landesarchiv do not only keep historical collections. It is constantly acquiring new information sources, since it is the archive responsible for the Tyrolean regional administration (provincial governor, regional government, office of the Tyrolean regional government, district administrative offices), for the Tyrolean provincial parliament (legislation) and for the judiciary in the province of Tyrol (Innsbruck Higher Regional Court, Innsbruck Provincial Court, district courts, public prosecutor’s offices). The Tiroler Landesarchiv continuously take over the records and documents from these bodies and departments that are to be preserved in perpetuity because they have been assessed as “worthy of archiving” (legally and/or historically relevant).

All existing documents, manuscripts, official books, files, maps and plans from around 1000 years are archived, indexed, restored and stored – with one goal in mind: To provide the official use by the delivering authorities, above all the regional administration and judicial authorities, as well as the non-official private use (for legal purposes) with the required documents, but also to be able to offer research and the general public interested in history a broad base of sources from the High Middle Ages to the present for research. Since 1918/1919 the surviving holdings have been geographically and thematically limited to the province of Tyrol, until then to the crown land or county of Tyrol, until the middle of the 18th century also including the Vorlande, i.e. the ducal Austrian territories west of the Arlberg (Vorderösterreich). For this reason, the Tiroler Landesarchiv have a supra-regional significance that extends far beyond today’s provincial borders.

The Tiroler Landesarchiv’s team is available in the reading room to advise and assist researchers, and to provide information to anyone making written or phone enquiries. The inspection or use of the documents is subject to compliance with the applicable general protection periods and data protection regulations.
