Paper money in Armenia

On 28 May 1918, the Democratic Republic of Armenia was founded as an independent state. Previously, the area was under the rule of the Ottoman and Russian Empires. Just two years later, Armenia became part of Russia again as the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic.

Up until independence, the Russian Empire’s paper money was in circulation and therefore the rouble was used as currency. Even after independence, the rouble remained the currency. The first own paper money was issued by the State Bank. It issued paper money in Armenia until the end of the Republic. In the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic, Soviet Union banknotes were in circulation as means of payment. The State Bank of the Soviet Union issued paper money in the currency Soviet rouble. In 1993, Armenia introduced its first own currency, the Armenian dram.
