Azerbaijan was part of the Russian Empire until 1918. After the collapse of the Russian Empire, the Democratic Republic of Azerbaijan was established. But just two years later, the state was captured by Soviet troops and became part of the Soviet Union. In 1922, the Transcaucasian Soviet Socialist Federative Republic was formed, consisting of the Soviet states of Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia. In 1936, it was dissolved and the constituent territories became individual union republics again.
Azerbaijan’s paper money history reflects political developments. In the Democratic Republic of Azerbaijan, the state issued paper money. The rouble was designated as the currency. From 1920, Soviet Union banknotes were in circulation as means of payment. The State Bank of the Soviet Union issued paper money in the currency Soviet rouble.
