Paper money in Malta

The present-day Republic of Malta was a British crown colony from 1814 to 1964. During this time, state paper money circulated in the currency of the pound. The Government of Malta first issued banknotes during the First World War. During the Second World War there was a shortage of coinage, so small-value notes were also issued.

After independence, the Central Bank of Malta was established. It now issued banknotes in the new currency, the Maltese lira. It is still the central bank of Malta today.
