Paper money in Cyprus
The present-day Republic of Cyprus was a British crown colony until 1960. During this time, state paper money circulated in the currency of the pound. The Government of Cyprus first issued banknotes during the First World War. During the Second World War there was a shortage of coinage, so small-value notes were also issued.
After independence, the Central Bank of Cyprus was established and a new currency, the Cyprus pound, was introduced. The island has been de facto divided since 1974. The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus uses the Turkish lira as its currency.
