Old directories

The oldest archive inventory after the establishment of an archive room in Wasserburg town hall in 1618 dates from 1644 (StadtA WS, AvA24) and was created by the town clerk Johann Joachim Trautt. Overviews of the foundations’ archives dating from the late 17th century are also preserved (StadtA WS, AvA18). The reorganisation, extension and arrangement of the holdings according to relevance by the town clerk Joseph Heiserer until 1832 is still understandable today on the basis of many older archival inventories (e.g. StadtA WS, AvA8).

Those directories which refer to the individual contents of higher-ranking archival records are of a rather interpretive nature, such as the directory of the town of Wasserburg’s town deputies and councillors (StadtA WS, Av5) or, also personal, the directories of citizens’ records contained in town chamber accounts and council minutes (StadtA WS, Av1 / StadtA WS, Av2). The indexing function of these directories is still relevant and has not been replaced by or transferred to modern forms of indexing to date.
