Colonialism denotes a form of rule in which territories and population groups are conquered, controlled, and exploited. Historically, this complex phenomenon spanned from the 16th century to the 20th century, leaving a legacy that is still being felt today. Colonialism was a predominantly geopolitical and economic project characterised by oppression, exploitation, discrimination, and violence, up to and including mass murder and genocide. Under the pretext of a "civilising mission", colonial powers exercised not only economic and political control, but also social and cultural authority over the societies they colonised, although this varied greatly depending on the territory and the actors involved. Despite its late entry, the German Empire acquired colonies in Africa, northeast China, and the Pacific between 1884 and 1900, building the fourth largest colonial empire in the world after Great Britain, France, and the Netherlands.
