The Architekturmuseum der Technischen Universität München
The "Architekturmuseum der TUM" (Architecture Museum of the TUM) is affiliated with the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and manages one of the largest archives in the German-speaking world encompassing all aspects of architecture. The continuously growing holdings serve as a basis for international research and publications as well as for teaching and exhibitions. The collection currently comprises around 600,000 drawings, 200,000 photographs, 1,500 models and many other media from over 700 architects, landscape architects and photographers. These include works by Leo von Klenze, Friedrich von Gärtner, Gottfried Semper, Theodor Fischer, Hanna Löv, Richard Riemerschmid, Richard Paulick, Josef Lembrock, Sigrid Neubert, Peter Latz and Behnisch & Partner.

When the university opened in 1868 in a new building to the west of the Alte Pinakothek, individual collections of teaching materials were set up for the teaching of architecture, which form the basis of today's archive. In 1912, the teaching materials were consolidated into the architecture collection and accommodated in magnificent collection rooms. Due to changes in architectural training, the historical model collection increasingly disappeared from the curriculum in the 1920s and 1930s: drawings and templates were replaced by photographs and glass negatives and the design concentrated increasingly on construction and building technology. The collection was gradually transformed into an architectural archive and was used as a scientific research facility. Timely removal from storage saved the holdings from destruction during the Second World War.
After the war, the drawings and photographs were stored at the university. Since 1975, the special collection has been methodically evolved into a scientific research archive with museum functions. In subsequent years, it was first made accessible to a broader audience through extensive exhibition activities, initially at the Münchner Stadtmuseum (Munich City Museum). As a result, the museum's international reputation flourished, leading to its inclusion in the plans for a third picture gallery or “Pinakothek” on the site of the former Turkish barracks in 1989.
Since 2002, with its dedicated exhibition spaces in the Pinakothek der Moderne, the TUM Architecture Museum has solidified its position as a platform for architectural discourse and as a showcase for the TUM Department of Architecture. Since 2022, the archive has been developing a collection and archiving strategy for digital architectural drawings and visualisations ("born-digital materials", since the 1990s).
