Vita et passio Apostolorum, item SS. Christophori, Lucae, Marci - BSB Clm 13074

Bayerische Staatsbibliothek

Description

This manuscript is illustrated with a complex cycle of paintings of the life and martyrdom of the Apostles and of Saint Christopher. Each text is typically accompanied by two full-page illustrations of between two and four scenes. The first picture shows the Apostle Thomas (folio 100 verso) on the way to his ship to India, standing above the wedding of a princess. This narrative cycle with illustrations of the Apostles is one of the earliest such cycles in book illumination. No comparable 12th-century collection of text and pictures of all 12 Apostles has been preserved, although various cycles on the lives of individual saints have survived. According to the description in the catalog of the Benedictine monastery of Saint Emmeram in Ratisbon (present-day Regensburg), the cycle originally contained even more illustrations than are preserved in this manuscript. The manuscript belonged to the municipal library of Regensburg and came to Munich in 1812.
