Description

Hartmann Schedel (1440-1514) was born in Nuremberg and became familiar with humanistic educational material during his medical studies in Italy. He settled in Nuremberg as a doctor in 1484, after several stops in between. Schedel published several works in which he compiled the knowledge of his time. His most famous world chronicle was in the tradition of late medieval historiography, modelled on ancient authors, church fathers and humanist historiographers: with over 2,000 pictures of 652 wooden sticks, it is the largest illustrated incunabulum and a real highlight. "It does not just offer historical events and people but also miraculous phenomena, sensational reports and geographical information, especially about cities and regions, in chronological order from the beginning of the world until 1492/1493" (Christoph Reske). In 1493 the Nuremberg printer and major publisher Anton Koberger published this German edition of the "Buch der Croniken vnd geschichten mit figuren vnd pildnussen von anbeginn der welt bis auf diese vnnsere zeit", translated by the scribe Georg Alt. It was intended as a parallel edition to the Latin edition. The Latin edition's sticks were reused for its woodcuts. Datum: 2016
