Description

The "Rhitmorum varietas" (1646-1652) by the Seeon Benedictine Johannes Werlin (1588-1666) comprises six volumes in the narrower sense and, as the seventh volume, a list of all the hymn books at Seeon Monastery. The books have a folio format, volumes Cgm 3636-3641 are continuously paginated, Cgm 3642 has its own pagination. The first volumes contain the song lyrics and their settings, the sixth volume is Werlin's attempt to systematically order the song material. The extensive vocal works contain a wealth of metric schemata and melodic types with an exemplary collection of foreign and mostly German poems, both secular and spiritual in content. All songs are continuo, apart from rewrites of existing lyrics there are personal songs to Werlin's friends and acquaintances as well as on current events. Money lending, toothache and wartime are some of the topics. The "Rhitmorum varietas" can be seen as the most important "practical poetics" of the Bavarian Baroque, "rich in imaginative compositions and its own folk song like lyrics" (Hans Pörnbacher).
