After his studies in Leipzig, Bernhard Hirschvelder (died approx. 1503) returned via Augsburg to his home town Nördlingen, where he was a scribe from 1473 to 1481. In 1482 he moved to Nuremberg as a master scribe and private teacher. He is one of the few school masters of the 15th century who taught their lessons in the vernacular. His "Ars memorativa, Ein kurtzer Tractat Der edlen vnd hochgeopten kunst der gedechtnus" was owned by Hartmann Schedel and was written between 1470 and 1475 in Nördlingen. The work, compiled largely from Latin sources, is a summary of mnemonics, a special branch of rhetoric since the Middle Ages, in which pictorial and diagrammatic representations play a prominent role. Models for the association of signs and the drawn subjects are, among others, antonymy (wise fool), etymology (Bernhart bear), phonetic similarity (Empeticles – am bett ein klerus), concreteness for abstraction (justice judge) as well as the characters themselves.
