Description

The most extensive German teaching poem of the Middle Ages with about 25,000 verses is the "Renner" (1300) by the East Franconian poet and Bamberg school principal Hugo von Trimberg (around 1230 - after 1313). Based on the allegory of the tree of life or man, it deals with the seven main sins and vices of the various estates. The work is an encyclopaedic compendium of knowledge that does not only make a statement on the seven liberal arts (grammar, rhetoric, dialectics, arithmetic, geometry, astronomy, music) but also on practical instruction and poetry, on the meaning of money, writing, tournaments, etc. These themes are touched upon in a very erratic way, hence the title. Fables, anecdotes and sermon tales are also interspersed in the moral teachings. The approximately 70 existing manuscripts bear witness to the vast preservation of the "Renner"; its impact extends well into the 18th century (Gellert, Lessing). This codex (middle of the 15th century), written in the Bavarian language by a single scribe, contains an abridged version of 5,291 verses. The drawings are undemanding, occasionally fleeting and clumsy. On leaf 2r are the German verses of the poem "Von der Jugend und dem Alter". Datum: 2016
