Princess Therese von Bayern (1850-1925), only daughter of Prince Regent Luitpold (1821-1912), was one of the most unusual women of her time. Even though she was prevented from attending secondary school or university, she taught herself twelve languages. Her particularly developed interest in the natural sciences and in ethnography led towards a busy scientific activity which was going to influence the composition of her library and the part of her estate administrated by the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek (Bavarian State Library) from 1926. The autograph manuscript "Meine Reise in den brasilianischen Tropen" presented here was published in 1897. She undertook her first, four-month overseas journey back in June 1888, at the age of 38, when she travelled to Brazil. "Here she travelled upriver on the Amazonas and again southwards along the eastern coast of Brazil - from there she went occasionally on excursions inland - all the way to São Paulo" (Ulla Siebert). In 1898, Therese undertook her greatest and most extravagant expedition to northern and western South America. To gather the greatest possible number of comparative ethnographical material for the scientific analysis of this Brazilian journey and thus for her publication, Therese continued her study tour to North America, travelling from Canada to Mexico and from the East Coast all the way to the West Coast.
