Turnier Buch Herzogs Wilhelm des Vierten von Bayern von 1510 bis 1545

Bayerische Staatsbibliothek

Description

"Duke Wilhelm IV of Bavaria's tournament book" (Cgm 2800) is one of the most famous and precious manuscripts in the holdings of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek (Bavarian State Library). It contains coloured pen drawings by the court painter Hans Ostendorfer (died 1570) from 1541 with depictions of tournaments that Wilhelm IV (1493-1550) had taken part in between 1510 and 1524. The work with 31 plates was elaborately reproduced in 1817 by the brothers Theobald (1777-1845) and Clemens Senefelder (1788-1833) after permission had been granted. This facsimile produced in stone printing is one of the best examples of reproduction lithography. Not only the black drawing but also the gold and silver of the armour were printed, reproduced and coloured in lithographic processes. This venture was not just an amazing achievement but also an expensive undertaking, the price of which was almost 200 guilders. The publication and production was made possible thanks to the support and encouragement of King Maximilian I Joseph of Bavaria (1756-1825), to whom the work was dedicated. Datum: 2019
