Schmidt, Franz Caspar: Mundus Christiano-Bavaro-Politicus About the Object

Description

The Mundus Christiano-Bavaro-Politicus is a mirror of princes composed between 1709 and 1711. It also contains “political science” and more literary passages. Its author is believed to be the electoral Bavarian privy councillor Franz Kaspar von Schmid (1658-1721). The manuscript introduces the reader with the help of central agents to the period of so-called absolutism (seventeenth/eighteenth centuries). The Mundus Christiano-Bavaro-Politicus was never published in print. Its four volumes are dedicated to the prince, to the prime minister, to the general and to the envoy. They are not limited to a mere description of the office but they engage with the most diverse arguments from the worlds of politics, constitutional law and history. The manuscript drips with antipathy against Austria, which had occupied Bavaria between 1704 and 1714. As no other comparable work in the German language, this mirror of princes offers a broad cross section of European knowledge during the period of the Spanish War of Succession.
