Klaviersonate "27. April 1945"

Bayerische Staatsbibliothek

Description

Karl Amadeus Hartmann's (1905-1963) piano sonata "27 April 1945" was created under the impression of the death marches from Dachau concentration camp, as the composer describes in the preceding motto: "On 27 and 28 April 1945, a stream of people of Dachau's 'Schutzhäftlingen' dragged themselves past us - the stream was endless - the misery was infinite - the suffering was extreme." It is an almost flawless fair copy of the work, in which numerous corrections are taken into account, which had been noted down by Hartmann in the second autograph, also at the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek (Bavarian State Library) in the composer's estate (signature: Mus. ms. 9660).
