Buxheimer Orgelbuch

Bayerische Staatsbibliothek

Description

The Orgelbuch (organ book), which came to the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek (Bavarian State Library) from the library of the Carthusian monastery of Buxheim near Memmingen in 1883, is the most fully preserved manuscript with sheet music for keyboard instruments from the fifteenth century. It contains about 100 arrangements of German songs as well as about 50 French and 50 Latin pieces respectively. There are only very few purely instrumental compositions without reference to vocal music. Several writers were involved in the production, with the main body of the manuscript, about two-thirds of the volume, originating from a single hand. The writers used the so-called "older German organ tablature", in which the upper voice was marked by notes, while the lower voices were notated with letters. Datum: 2016
