Die hl. Familie aus dem Hause Canigiani

Alte Pinakothek

Description

The figures of the Holy Family are arranged in a strictly pyramidal composition. The familiarity is expressed by means of the viewing and relational axes that develop between the figures and that tie up the composition. The precise observation of human forms of behaviour makes the painting look natural despite its formal rigour. The group of angels that is important for the balance of the composition had been overpainted in the late eighteenth century and was only revealed again in 1983.
