Bauspiel Schiff

Die Neue Sammlung - The Design Museum

Description

The children’s room furniture and games designed by Alma Siedhoff-Buscher (1899-1944) for the Bauhaus exhibition in 1923, including the shipbuilding game produced in two different sizes, grabbed the general public’s attention. The shipbuilding game was made in the Bauhaus carpentry workshop. It quickly developed into one of the most successful objects that were created at the university. It teaches their educational principles of creative expression as an elementary act of human activity through play. With its clear shape, harmonious proportions and colourful cheerfulness, Buscher’s design in this sense aims to stimulate the child’s desire to play and experiment. However, Buscher was also guided by the Bauhaus design principles. The idea of sawing all the individual parts from two wooden strips was an almost modern idea promoting efficiency and sustainability.
