Phantasiepferd mit Reiter

Die Neue Sammlung - The Design Museum

Description

Dagobert Peche (1887-1923) is one of the most talented and important representatives of the Wiener Werkstätte. Founded in 1903, it had made its goal to design hand crafted objects for all areas of life. Initially, the designs concentrated on a strongly geometric, architecturally shaped formal language. When Peche joined in 1915 though, the focus shifted more to the extensive ornamentation of objects. The Wiener Werkstätte experienced its heyday as a result. The joy of detailed, exact as well as artistic decoration is also reflected in Peche's little horse with rider. Peche produced numerous designs for fantasy animals, which he had elaborately decorated by his employees. They are documented in photographs and sketches in the Wiener Museum für Angewandte Kunst (Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna). However, only the little horse that is preserved in Munich's Die Neue Sammlung has survived.
